Vision Statement
The Robbins Rehabilitation Sports Medicine Institute is dedicated to providing the highest quality sports performance training available in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. We will outsmart, outclass, and outwork all competing programs to get the highest possible performance from each athlete we train. We will use the best technology, research, and science available to help every athlete realize their full athletic potential.
How Was RRSMI Born?
The Robbins Rehabilitation SMI, as the name implies, has its roots in rehabilitation and more specifically physical therapy. Robbins Rehabilitation opened its doors in March of 2003 on 19th Street in Allentown, Pa. Travis Robbins started his physical therapy practice in a single room with little more than a desire to provide the best possible rehabilitation for his injured patients. Fed up with larger, corporate-style companies that dominated the area with their poor patient care, Travis set out to "Change Physical Therapy in the Lehigh Valley," as their motto says.
Travis's twin brother, Todd, soon joined Travis, and the two opened their second office in Phillipsburg, N.J., in 2004. Todd had been working with PGA professionals in central N.J., directing a golf sports performance program and coaching with the Rutgers University Olympic power lifting team. Together the brothers built their company from one room in Allentown to two thriving facilities in two states.
The Robbins brothers have a personal history rooted in athletic competition and performance. Both were three-sport athletes and team captains in high school and went on to play football at nationally ranked Ithaca College where Todd was an Academic All-American. Their sports background motivated them to expand their physical therapy practice to work more closely with healthy athletes, helping them improve performance while at the same time preventing injuries. They began to build RRSMI by researching sports performance programs across North America and Europe to determine the most effective way for athletes to reach their full potential.
After searching extensively, they found what they were looking for in a company also based in the physical therapy field: Pneumex. Developed by renowned physical therapists Ralph Simpson PT, OCS, CMPT, ATC, and Pete Draovitch PT, MSMPT, Pneumex is at the cutting edge of sports performance training and injury prevention in athletes. Put simply, physical therapists are movement specialists. No academic background is more suited to determining what athletes need to perform at their best. Todd and Travis knew that coupling their rigorous academic study of human movement patterns with this new technology would enable them to open new doors of athletic performance for their clients.
In 2008, Todd and Travis purchased the equipment necessary to begin their program, and after a series of pilot studies, are now offering programs to the general public. The world's fastest treadmill (32 mph) and vibration plate training are now available to athletes in the Lehigh Valley. Nowhere else in the area can you find this level of technology grouped with the knowledge base of physical therapists.
